Since its inception, the Performing Arts Center has solicited increased general support from the community at large. In 2002, the “Partners for PAC” was created as a membership organization whose purpose is to provide through a donation, general operating monies. In turn, the Partners have been offered volunteer opportunities, a newsletter, and recognition as a Partner. In 2003 the No-Go Gala was designed as a major gifts fund-raiser. It allows people to participate in providing monies for the operating expenses of the PAC without having to attend an event. The PAC, as it is frequently called, continues to broaden its audience demographics to include all age groups and socio-economic ranges. Its mission is to keep admission and ticket costs at an affordable level, allowing the entire community to enjoy its programs and events. Targeted populations include children and youth and local year round residents.

In July of 1995, five people with a vision of a community theater in Highlands decided to act on that vision and started the Highlands Community Players. Sara Mayer, Carol Lucas, Jerri Talley, Jean Morris and April Hershey each put in $100 of their own money, sat down and chose three plays - Steel Magnolias, Dearly Departed and A Thurber Carnival - and wrote to get the rights to do them. They then petitioned the Highlands Chamber of Commerce to let them rent the Conference Center to put on these three plays and set out to get some platforms built to use for a stage. They continued to schedule a fall, winter, and spring play with performances on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. The "Readers Theatre" has become a tradition during the Christmas season.

Glen Falls
Glen Falls, Nantahala National Forest, Highlands, NC, USA
http://www.visitnc.com/listing/glen-falls
here are several beautiful falls and accompanying cascades here that drop 640 feet in only a half-mile. So, though the well-maintained trail to the 70-, 60-, and 15-foot waterfalls in the Glen Falls Scenic Area is less than a mile long, it is steep and tough to hike back up. To reach the area, take NC Hwy 106 just south of Highlands for less than 2 miles until you see the Glen Falls Scenic Area sign on the left and take S.R.1619 immediately on the right. From there, it’s a mile to the trail that leads from a parking area.

Appalachian Trail
Hwy 64 Winding Stair Gap, Franklin, NC, United States
http://www.appalachiantrail.org/about-the-trail/terrain-by-state/north-carolina
(828) 254-3708
South of the Smokies on the Appalachian Trail are the long climbs of the Stecoah-Cheoah Mountain area, then the outstanding Nantahala section, with 4,000-foot gaps and 5,000-foot peaks. Cheoah Bald offers panoramic views of western North Carolina. Like much of the A.T. in the deep South, you have a feeling of remoteness, and a sensation of being in deep forests. The variety of forest growth and the beauty of the flowering shrubs, along with the many spectacular views, make this entire section of Trail memorable. The section from the Nantahala River to the Georgia border features the best-graded trail at high elevations anywhere in the Deep South, with a couple of short exceptions. There are lots of views from natural openings and fire towers, some requiring short side trips.
